Quick answer: Dreamland gives every mattress a feel label, from extra plush to extra firm. If you like a soft bed, start with Pegasus Plush, Omega Pro Plush, Omega Plush or Lincoln Plush. For something in the middle, look at Pegasus Medium, Omega Pro Medium, Omega Medium, Galaxy, Lincoln Medium or Liverpool. For firmer support, try Aurora, Lincoln Firm, Newcastle or Titan.

Feel labels are Dreamland’s own, set across its own range, so a “medium” here won’t necessarily match a “medium” from another maker.

How to choose

Start with feel

Firmness is personal. As the US-based Sleep Foundation puts it, what feels comfortable to one person may feel too soft or too firm for another. If you have no strong preference, a medium is a sensible place to start: the Sleep Foundation notes that most mattresses sit between 4 and 7 on its 10 point scale, the range most people find comfortable.

Then think about how you sleep

  • Side sleepers often prefer a softer feel, so your shoulder and hip can sink in a little. Look at the plush and plush-medium models first (Sleep Foundation).
  • Back and stomach sleepers tend to prefer firmer mattresses (Sleep Foundation). Look at the medium to extra firm models first.
  • Body weight: generally, heavier people prefer firmer mattresses, and lighter people often find firm beds too hard and lean towards soft to medium firm options (Sleep Foundation).
  • Sharing a bed: if you and your partner like different feels, try mattresses together before you choose. Pocket springs, which every model here uses, move independently, so one person turning over is less likely to disturb the other.

These are starting points, not rules.

Check the size before the feel

Dreamland makes mattresses in standard New Zealand sizes:

SizeWidth x length
Single91 x 188 cm
King Single107 x 203 cm
Double137 x 188 cm
Queen153 x 203 cm
King167 x 203 cm
Super King183 x 203 cm

Not every model comes in every size. Pegasus, Omega Pro and Aurora come in Queen, King and Super King only, and Liverpool goes from Single to King. Depth matters too: the range runs from about 25 cm (Galaxy) to about 38 cm (Omega Pro Plush), so check your fitted sheets and base height before you buy a deeper mattress.

Try before you buy

When you try a mattress in store, Consumer NZ suggests taking your shoes off and spending at least 15 minutes lying on it, bringing your partner, and trying it on a base like the one you have at home. Lie on your back and slide a hand under the small of your back: if it slides through easily and your hips and shoulders feel uncomfortable, the mattress may be too hard for you, and if there’s no gap at all it may be too soft. Then try rolling over.

If you have ongoing back pain or another medical condition, talk to your GP or physio before you buy.
